Who is Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort?

Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort was born on January 30, 1673 in Montfort-sur-Meu near Rennes, to Jean Baptiste Grignion and Jeanne Robert. He studied at the Jesuit College in Rennes and pursued his studies at the Seminary of Saint-Sulpice in Paris. After being ordained a priest in 1700, he preached nearly 200 missions throughout western France. On April 28, 1716, at the age of 43, Father de Montfort fell ill, worn out by hard work and sickness, and died. He was buried in the basilica in Saint-Laurent-sur-Sèvre (Vendée). Canonized on July 20, 1947 by Pope Pius XII, and the Church celebrates his feast on April 28.

Father de Montfort left numerous writings, the main one being the Love of Eternal Wisdom, but the most famous is A Treatise on the True Devotion from which Saint John Paul II drew his papal motto "Totus tuus". The spirituality of Father de Montfort can be summed up as follows: Jesus Christ Wisdom and the Cross, Mary and mission. He founded three religious congregations and lay associates: The Daughters of Wisdom, The Brothers of Saint Gabriel, the Montfort Missionaries, and the Montfort Associates.

His life, his spirituality as well as his missionary method are still relevant today. To acquire the holiness of the children of God, to attain the stature of Christ, Father de Montfort suggests following the Marian path, consecrating yourself to Jesus Christ through the hands of Mary to fully experience the commitments of our baptism.
