Romanesque Marian Art

Romanesque Art developed in the West between the years 970 and 1230. It was characterized by a flourishing display of religious architectural constructions which were both unadorned and imposing, with sober lines.

Architecture

Among the many gems of Romanesque architecture we should especially mention: the basilicas of Saint Ambrose in Milan, Vézelay, Marmoutier and Avignon in France, the Speyer Cathedral in Germany, and the Cathedral of Solsona in Spain.

Nonrepresentational Art

Romanesque Art is also a nonrepresentational art of great value as well. It can be interpreted as a transcription in the stone of musical rhythms and gaps between musical notes, for example.

The art of illumination

Monks in their monasteries copied texts (from the Bible, the lives of saints, or sermons) on parchment whose pages they decorated with illuminations.

Another famous illumination work from that period is the Ingeborg Psalter.

Church Art

Stone sculptures adorn portal tympanums and pillar capitals, and liturgical objects are covered with decorative art.
