Santa Cruz: Mamita di Cotota

Santa Cruz: Mamita di Cotota

The shrine is situated 12½ miles from Santa Cruz (Bolivia).

Origin:

The most popular legend tells that when a family of African slaves, the Barrosos, was unjustly accused of murder, they fled from their master, a certain Cortez. During their flight, the fugitives found a small statue representing the Immaculate Conception inside a hollow tree trunk. They kept it in their humble cabin, but later generations erected first an oratory, then a shrine, to preserve the memory of answered prayers and obtained miracles.

Today the shrine is kept by Dominicans friars.

Feast Day:

December 7 and 8, coinciding with the feast of the Immaculate Conception.
