Our Lady of Victory National Shrine and Basilica is located near Buffalo, New York. It is known as Father Baker’s shrine, that is the “Padre of the Poor” and the founder of the “City of Charity.”
When Father Baker was 79 years old, he wanted to honor the Mother of God, his patroness, Our Lady of Victory, the one who had helped him with the poor for so many years.
Out of love, he wanted to offer her a masterpiece, with the best materials, the best artists, sure that the Virgin Mary would provide for all that was needed. And the magnificent shrine was completed in May of 1926.
Father Baker's mortal remains were placed in the Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto in 1999, south of the basilica’s transept. On January 14, 2011 Pope Benedict XVI named him Venerable Nelson Baker.
Currently, over 3,500 children receive care each year in education, adoption, emergency housing, and even general dental care. Father Baker also built a hospital.
