In New York City alone, at least seventy-six Roman Catholic churches are dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The following is a sample of a few Marian shrines throughout the state.
Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto in the Bronx
This grotto is graced by a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes standing in a small stone enclosure. It was built nearby (and at the request of) Saint Lucy's Roman Catholic Church. Many Catholics visit the grotto for spiritual guidance from Our Lady of Lourdes and also for the healing powers of the water there.
The Bronx's own Lourdes shrine was completed in 1939 and has become known as the "Lourdes of America" over time. It is a pilgrimage destination for New Yorkers and visitors alike, and is simply a haven for quiet prayer away from the buzz and tumult of life.
Our Lady of Fatima Shrine
Since 1954, this shrine has been sought for its beautiful natural surroundings, the artworks it contains, communal prayer and renewal. It attracts countless pilgrims desirous to answer Our Lady's call to repentance, prayer and peace. The statue of Our Lady, carved from Vermont granite, is 13 feet high and weighs ten tons.
Mass and daily confessions, as well as First Saturday devotions are all available, and the 13th of each month is marked with the Rosary and an evening Mass.
