Work on the shrine began in 1958, to produce a most striking expression of modern architecture. In addition, the landscape architect strategically placed devotional sites throughout the Shrine's vast acreage.
The Lourdes Grotto is nested in a beautiful, wooded area, and tastefully ornamented with flower gardens, tress, and shrubs: it is a favorite devotional visit for pilgrims. The Shrine's Way of the Cross takes the visitors through a grove of evergreens and pines. The Annunciation Garden stands majestically on a hill at the highest elevation of the Shrine. The Agony Garden is a perfect place for visitors to pray and reflect in quiet solitude. Finally, a pathway leads the visitor up to and around the Resurrection Cave that resembles a giant stone. A tomb-like, vacant slab in the cave represents the Risen Christ.
With Mary, each person discovers the Redeemer of all
The Guild Center, named after the founder Father Edwin J. Guild, O.M.I., offers a variety of programs to lead people to a deeper awareness of the presence of God in their lives. Throughout the year, the Shrine offers Bible classes, charismatic celebrations, spiritual retreats, and sessions for specific audiences such as the widowed or divorced. There is even a playground and a rock climbing wall for teens!
